SEO vs GEO: What Changes and What Doesn't
Ranking and being cited are related but different problems. Here is where they diverge.

Every few years marketing gets a new acronym and a wave of people insisting the old one is dead. Generative engine optimisation, or GEO, has arrived with exactly that energy. So it is worth being precise about what has actually changed between optimising for search engines and optimising for generative systems, and what has not changed at all.
What has not changed
Crawlability still matters. If a system cannot fetch your pages quickly and cleanly, nothing else you do counts. Blocked resources, slow responses, broken canonical tags and orphaned pages hurt you in both worlds.
Relevance still matters. You have to be about the thing the buyer is asking about, in language close to how they ask it. Keyword stuffing was never the point; topical alignment always was.
Authority still matters. Independent corroboration, credible authorship and demonstrable expertise have been ranking considerations for years. They are now recommendation considerations too.
Good writing still matters. Clear, well-organised, genuinely useful content wins in both systems for the same reason: it is easier to understand and safer to trust.
If you have been doing SEO properly, you are not starting from zero. You are starting from a foundation.
What has changed: the unit of success
In classic search the unit of success is a ranking position for a query, which produces a click, which produces a session. You can measure all three.
In generative search the unit of success is inclusion in an answer. There may be no click. The buyer may read the answer, absorb your name, and go on to search for you directly, ask a colleague, or visit a week later. The attribution chain is longer and looser.
This changes how you measure and, more importantly, what you optimise for. Being cited in a synthesised answer that a buyer trusts can be worth more than a position three ranking that a buyer scrolls past, even though the former is harder to see in your analytics.
What has changed: the reader
Search engines index pages. Generative systems interpret them. That distinction sounds academic but it changes how content should be constructed.
An index rewards pages that match query terms and accumulate signals. An interpreter rewards pages that can be understood, summarised and quoted accurately. That means direct answers near the top, clear definitions, explicit statements of who something is for, and claims that are specific enough to be lifted into a response without losing meaning.
Early research into generative engines found that adding citations, quotations from credible sources and statistics tended to increase a page's visibility in generated answers, while surface-level keyword insertion did little. That is consistent with what we observe: models favour material that looks like evidence.
What has changed: the importance of the entity
SEO has always been page-centric. You optimise a URL to rank for a term. GEO is far more entity-centric. The system is building a picture of your organisation as a whole, assembled from your site, your profiles, your coverage and your presence in the training data.
That means a brilliant page on a poorly defined company underperforms an average page on a well-defined one. The work shifts upstream: who are you, what category are you in, where are you, who vouches for you, and does every source agree?
What has changed: coverage and phrasing
A ranking is won for one query. A recommendation is earned across many. Buyers ask assistants in full sentences, with context, in dozens of variations. Coverage across those variations, not dominance of one head term, is what puts you in the consideration set consistently.
Practically, this rewards answering the real questions buyers ask, in the words they use, across a connected body of content, rather than chasing a short list of high-volume keywords.
What has changed: what you can see
Search consoles show you impressions, clicks and positions. No equivalent exists for generative systems. You cannot log in and see how often ChatGPT mentioned you last month.
You can, however, measure it yourself: ask a defined set of buyer questions across multiple models on a schedule, record who is named and how, and track the change. This is the discipline Beacon automates. It is not perfect, and any tool that claims perfect measurement here is overselling. But a consistent, repeatable baseline is far better than guessing.
SEO asked "where do we rank". GEO asks "are we in the answer, and is the answer right about us".
How to hold both
The mistake is to treat these as rival disciplines with rival teams. They are one discipline with a wider brief. Keep the technical foundations and the content quality that SEO taught you. Add the entity clarity, evidence, corroboration and question coverage that generative systems reward. Measure both, knowing the second is harder to see.
The companies that do this will find that the work compounds. A clearly defined, well-corroborated, genuinely useful company tends to rank well and be recommended well, because both systems are, in the end, trying to identify the same thing: the answer a buyer will be glad they were given.
